Food Security Committee
Purpose and Goals
The purpose of the Food Security Committee is to find solutions to address the unmet food security needs of the residents of North County and to increase access to a secure food supply and food shed.
The Food Security Committees primary goals are to assess and support the creation of strategies, plans, and programs to assure there is adequate food to sustain the residents of North County on a daily basis and during times of disaster and interruption in the food delivery system. The Committee works to increase accessibility to existing food sources, augment the existing food system, increase collaboration between all organizations working on food security and advocate for positive changes in public policy affecting access to food.
The Food Security Committee was one of 14 successful applicants to receive a USDA national Hunger Free Communities Planning Grant to study the nature and extent of hunger and related challenges and opportunities in North San Diego County. As a part of this grant, the ARS Food Security Committee created the Food Policy Council. The Council is responsible for guiding the grant research, working to develop a plan to end hunger in North County that will include recommendations to develop and promote a sustainable food system in North San Diego County.
Meeting Schedule
The ARS Food Security Committee does not have regularly scheduled meetings. Instead, the Food Security Committee attends the North County Food Policy Council meetings scheduled on the third Thursday of each month. The ARS Food Security also sends representatives to other food security meetings including the San Diego Food System Work Group, the San Diego Urban-Rural Roundtable, the San Diego Farm to School Program, and the San Diego Hunger Coalition. ARS members interested in this committee are encouraged to attend any of these meetings.
